I would like to join in on this WAN (*ctwug) to communicate with friends in Belville, Kuilsrivier areas. One 'stupid' question: If I am connected to the ctwug wan and my friends are, how will I see their computers (IP's)?

Also I do not have any wireless equipment at the moment but are realy interested.

I stay in Wynberg near Military Hospital

Any one to help me?

Hi there,

My name is Juan, and I'd be interested in giving ctwug a bash. I live in Blouberg, near the old FNB. I was actually thinking of starting something like this myself, but then I ran into this. :)

I'm fairly new to wireless, but know the theory - also a seasoned veteral sysadmin (linux, windows, mac) of around 9 years. I'd be willing to offer my services if required.

Does ctwug provide any services to connected members, or is it just the infrastructure to connect to other users (file sharing, etc).

How would I go about getting connected - what equipment is recommended, and what sort of costs are involved. If this takes off, I wouldn't mind sponsoring/becoming a node in this area if required.

Oh, ps - if it's allowed, I might be able to offer wireless e-mail hosting to users at some point in the future. Just a thought - drop a message if anybody is interested.

Juan

Hi there. I'm definetly interested in joining the wug. Currently have a few links to peeps in other parts of bellville providing them with ethernet/internet.
Basically to play games/chat/share stuff.

Yesterday got told by my building manager that I can put up a antenna on the roof cause they don't want an unsightly antenna sticking out the building.

So now i got access to the 12th floor roof and i have los with bellville/brackenfell/welgelegen/southern suburbs.

I was thinking bout it an I think i can put up an omni with my directional up there so that we can get every1 sorted that way.

SavageDavid. I think you have my googleplacemark already but it's a bit off.

Does anybody know the range of an omni and when it starts to sux for connecting peeps?

don't use an omni, just creates more noise. We have a sector that was installed last week, it is pointed right at you. Scan tygerberg hill, see if you can connect

SSID? something with wug he?
WIll try this weekend when we get the antenna up.
Well if an omni is out what would you recommend.
I need to get at least a 180* spread on my signal. Cause if i have to connect to you an i want to connect to people in brackenfell what would b the best bet?

Also was wondering bout this.
Even if i connect how do i pick up an ip? do i set me pc to automatic or do you have a ip for me?

Also how do you authenticate? is it open like anyone can jump on? do i need a wep key? do you guys on ure side do mac filtering?

To link to us and this goes for all links, stay away from omni antenna, yes it is nice that it covers a hugh area with a single antenna but it creates alot of noise for other ppl around you. Use a directional link where ever possible. If you want to cover large areas, use sector antenna's.

on that side of tygerberg the ssid is "ctwug-low" the highsite is being tested right now, limited access. We don't use dhcp, come chat in the irc channel we can give you an ip address.

how does it work tho? I have a wireless network ... If I WDS with you guys ... then my adsl connection is exposed to you guys!

Mufasa

freeek, all firewalling and access is controlled by you, on your side of the link. If someone gains access to your adsl/lan NOP (not our problem). It should have been protected with a firewall etc ....

24-7online.co.za 00026F3F7658 3 67% 802.11b and
ctwug-low 00026F3E2283 7 66% 802.11g

got the mail, but i don't think you will be able to connect. you are receiveing the signal at 66% but how much of your signal is reaching the ctwug-low site? Those scans just show the receive signal strength from the ap's not that your signal will reach back to the ap.
