View Full Version : Verdict on Ubiquiti ?

I'm ready to go onto the WUG, but require some hardware input...
I looked at LOS and I can connect to Afroman or Hunted (if he adds access point).
Hunted = 85m
Afroman = 1.3km
Can I use Ubiquiti kit and what would I require?
I will only ever be a client as I do not have enough hight - Hunted is already better situated for our area....
I'd say mikrotik recommended, Ubiquity allowed.
And try aim for afroman, bit further, but it has a sektor to connect to.

Well checked the specs on the Nanostation 5 and asked at Scoop... and it can easliy reach Afroman by distance.
Next thing get onto the roof and see if I can "actually" see Afroman's site...binoculars assisted though :)
If you want to go the Ubiquiti route rather go for a bullet with a grid antenna, signal should be better and you can link up any type of antenna you want. Although the NanoStation5 has a external connector for an antenna there is issues with the connector. I would recommend a bullet with a 24dbi grid rather than a NanoStation
I would say contact Afroman first to see if he is running nstream on that sector. Other clients might be upset/disappointed if they have to run at slower speeds just because you connect with a Nanostation.
Rather get a Mikrotik CPE -> http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=49_46&products_id=523
It is R200 more expensive yes, but it is a bit more powerful than the nanostation (in both signal strength and cpu power).
Also, while only Mikrtotik hardware connects to the sector they can run nstreme, and that will make your connection perform a bit (or a lot, depending on the situation) faster.
Another option is the 5.8ghz integrated enclosure with a rb411ar inside. The 411ar has a built in 2.4ghz radio card and one mini pci slot for another radio. Then you can put a lekker large 2.4 omni on top of your kit and your neighbors can connect to the wug too :)
So, you connect to the site using the 5.8 panel and broadcast using a 2.4 omni. If every wugger did this we can blanket most of the neighborhoods in the northern suburbs :D

Would I still require a POE injector with either of these?

Forgive me for being a noob, but how do I get hold of Afroman?

POE-15 by Scoop?
- My persoonlike opinie hier.

Is jy seker ek gaan nie kwaai CTWUG vriende maak as ek 2.4 broadcast nie:eek:

Yeah, if each wugger puts up an omni, pretty soon you can achieve 2 things....
1. you cover a very large area where everyone can connect with standard laptops....wug roaming
2. you can then look at meshing all the omni's with the meshing protocol and wds...this will give some amazzing through put and take a large load of the HS's.

Nou daai was my view gewees oor nanostation5.

The 2.4 spectrum is already stuffed, chucking a bunch of omni's in the air will just make it worse for all wuggers a like and the general public out there.
Find a solution, don't find a problem!!!!!
/me spits sy ore
Bullet's might be the only way to get ppl connected in areas like rondebosch.....any other suggestions welcome.

I will do as I hope other people also do - conclude with my feedback :)
I spoke to Hunted and he said the same, so I opted for a 19 dBi MicroTik CPE
with 411 RB + R52 radio - kit from Scoop and contributed to my 10% rebate to CTWUG :)
My observation: the 19dBi panel is great... even with a 27dBi? (test kit) I barely got a better signal to Afroman. So I decided to connect via Hunted...
We set everything up over up over the weekend and even with a -55 loss (Hunted's grid barely peeks out behind his cowl due to the mast's position) we are still getting +- 100% CCQ on data rate set to default (54 Mbps) with nstreme on...
I guess we can and probably will tweak and fiddle a bit more, but I cannot fault the decision to go with MicroTik...
Thanks for all your valuable feedback.

Hehe, stop messing around and turn on Turbo mode! :D
2x54mbps between you and Hunted... oooo lekker.

You have to tell Hunted...I'm way to new to know how to do that :)
i was also gonna say you should turbo....but if you on a sector it is not so easy....unless everyone turbos
p.s....soz...looks almost like i hi-jacked your forum earlier.
