Hi there,

I've been thinking, and would like to start a wug in Malmesbury, but to make it attractive it will most likely be linked to the ctwug. I've contacted PaarlOnline and asked them if they would help. They told me to compile an email to explain exactly what i want to do and what advantages there would be for them.

I have the equipment to connect to a node, but once again, theres no wug in Malmesbury yet. Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated. I'm a complete wireless noob, but im quite interested to learning how these types of wireless work etc.

Kind Regards
vastra

Well on their side, i think the part in bold would cause a problem, because if they wanting to try make money out of connecting then they are looking at the wrong place.

Also there would be extra work for them to do if they do indeed connect their wisp to a node as routing etc will have to follow.

CTWUG admins might also have a thing or two to say about the "venture" as in all honesty, not many of us are fond of wisps but who knows anything could happen... speak to n0s

Vastra, just get friends and see if you guy's have LOS "line of sight" to each other. Or get uncle or granny's house that's on a hill higher than the rest of town that can cover a piece of the town and put sector up. Or you can even put a omni 2.4 antenna up and broadcast its SSID www.malmesburywug.za.net, get that domain, put website up with info or even an irc link. 2.4 SSID is 'n nice way of advertizing. You can put that omni up at your own place too. You dont need a wisp with the longest mast. You have to make the first start, the rest will follow. You probably will have slow start, but at the end it will be worth it.

Hi people,

We have started to experiment with nanostations and some standalone links. Slowly but surely some links are coming up. We might just be getting there someday.

Thanks for all the input.

Hi Vastra. Your best bet is to get a wug going in Malmesbury, and in the future some time we can figure out a way to link your wug to ctwug.

Even with a few people a wug is tons of fun :D

I also know of one person in atlantis,on Wind there is a whole group {Not Connected} that would like to be connected to CTWUG,just for interest sake, what would it take to get everyone on that side on CTWUG?There is a Backbone near kalbaskraal area if im not mistaken, thats how things form a WUG,take a group of people in a area on a Couple of AP's and put them on the backbone.

As Stated,id just like to know how thing get started in this regard

Hey Vastra,

Have you guys attempted any scans yet!? My parents have moved to Malmesbury recently...My father has alot of knowledge of IT and Wireless in general, I will be visiting there from time to time and would seriously like to get them wugged. Like the guys said, its easier to setup a wug between you guys and see who has LOS to a CTWUG node from there. My parents node http://wind.ctwug.za.net/wind/index.php?page=nodes&node=5103

There was a guy on IRC asking about linking up a while back aswell. he managed to get right to use one of the towers just outside of malmesbury. close to the old MX track for those who know malmesbury. Klipkoppie #4638 node.

looks like that will be able to get LOS to a few sites in kfn area.

Cant remember his nickname tho..
