View Full Version : Latency on WISP
Hi all, anyone out there make use of jazznet or any of the other WISPs? I would like to know what kind of leatency I can expect. My number one use would be on the SGS games server :)

the normal latency on a good quality wireless link would be 5 - 30 ms. After that it depends on the path out of the WISP - i.e. whether it goes out on digi / satellite.
my main concern is local, high international ping doesn't bother me. Assuming the WISP uses ADSL for internet access then i would be looking at about 30-50ms (local to saix.net) plus wifi latency 30ms. So I'm looking at about 80ms. That is liveable :)
My buddy from hellkom.co.za used to have UniNet with a ping of +/- 7-13ms to the SGS CS:S Server.
Pinging www.saix.net [196.25.1.200] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 196.25.1.200: bytes=32 time=32ms TTL=248
Reply from 196.25.1.200: bytes=32 time=28ms TTL=248
Reply from 196.25.1.200: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=248
Reply from 196.25.1.200: bytes=32 time=22ms TTL=248
That's running 512k adsl on a access point 8-10km away
Hi
I'm with Wireless Online and get the following:

Reply from 196.25.1.200: bytes=32 time=27ms TTL=244
Reply from 196.25.1.200: bytes=32 time=22ms TTL=244
Ping statistics for 196.25.1.200:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Is this good?
actually that's a bit better than I used to get on ADSL :D
