One of the biggest problems with joining CTWUG is the high barrier of entry because of the hardware costs. You need to spend at least R1200 and possibly up to R2000 for a CPE. If you want to broadcast as well you are looking at R2500 to R5000. This is problematic to say the least.
The second problem is that once someone has spent this much money they can’t really donate any more.
Here is my proposal:
Any new member can borrow a CPE from CTWUG under the following conditions:
1 - CTWUG owns the hardware and can take it back at any time.
2 - The value of the CPE is based on 150% of the total cost at Scoop (VAT inc).
3 - They make a 20% donation based on the value of the CPE.
4 - Any donations that member makes is subtracted from the amount owed to CTWUG for the CPE.
5 - When the member does not owe CTWUG anything for the CPE it becomes his property.
6 - If, after 12 months, the member has not donated to cover at least 80% of the value of the CPE it is returned to CTWUG.
7 - The member can swop out his CPE for a better one and the difference in value is calculated.
8 - If the member broadcasts to 3 or more other members he only has to pay back 70% of CPE value.
Explanation of points:
1 - Until the member pays for the hardware in full it remains CTWUG property.
2 - The 50% markup is to help CTWUG grow. That is the crux of this proposal.
3 - At least cover part of the value of the CPE to make sure the member is committed.
4 - Until the new member has finished paying off his hardware all his donations are used to cover his hardware.
5 - The reward at the end is full ownership of the hardware.
6 - Create a time limit on how long he can freeload on CTWUG hardware.
7 - If the member wants to broadcast but he originally got a Client only CPE he can swop it for a CPE that can broadcast as well. We don’t want to lock him into a leech only mode.
8 - Encourage broadcast CPE units above Client only CPE units. Even if they only pay back 70% of the cost of the CPE it stil covers the Scoop expense (70% of the 150% = 105%).
CTWUG could put together a few standard CPE units:
Integrated panel CPE, RB411 (Short distance client only)
Grid antennae CPE, RB411 (Long distance client only)
2x panel CPE, RB433 (Short distance client + broadcast)
Grid + panel CPE, RB433 (Long distance client + broadcast)
etc.
This is a very rough draft, please feel free to poke a bunch of holes in my plan :)
