View Full Version : WLAN in Northern Suburbs-Kuilsriver
Hi ppl.I want to put up an AP in the Kuilsriver region.Currently it seems that there are no activity on that side.Anyone interested please contact me.I'm moving to that location early 2006.Any other info regarding maximum LOS distance would also be of great help. This is a great opprotunity (I think) for the Northern suburbs to hop on the free world of sharing and gamming! So please ppl let's do this! ;)

I have AP's up in Brackenfell and Kuilsriver. Let me know when you've moved in and we can link up
I just receive an update on when I move and it is by the end of Jan 2006.I did some extensive reading on how to setup AP's but help from expierenced guys would be a bonus for me.I would like to buy the equipment so come end of Jan I can just "plug and play". ;)

My first post here. I haven't really read up all that much on wireless AP's and the lot - my brother put me onto this site.
I'm staying in Anandale, Kuilsriver - basically next to the Pick&Pay on the Bottelary road.
Would be interested to join in on the fun

The one in Brackenfell is near Ranch Meat, and the one in Kuilsriver is in Mikro Park, just off Langverwacht road, however that one is a dish which I am going to use to link to the Brackenfell AP. Not sure yet if I'll have perfect line of sight, so I might need to bounce through another AP to get a link. I still need to get a laptop wireless-g card so I can use Netstumbler to align the dish and see if the link works. An AP in Annandale would be good tho, Screamer. It's a good spot from which to span the distance across the veld to Brackenfell. I think I might change the antenna at my house to an Omni-directional. That would allow you guys to link thru my AP fairly easily
some info on maximum LOS from a mikrotik client :
"This 35Mbit at 57km is with non-turbo mode, unidirectional, with random-data=no. Machines on both ends are 700MHz C3. During the test, both routers (that have few more Atheros interfaces each), were not transporting traffic."
NO!!! whatever u do, don't change to a omni (just ask mufasa, hehe) there's just to much interferance for a descent link - a omni's best place (except the rubbish bin) is at a high site where there's little interferance from other devices - rather go for a sector
I need to get some sort of "strong" link, cause I'm down Nooiensfontein road.I am willing to pay that extra buck, but at least it must work.I'm talking about 6km from where I'm going to be at the end o Jan 2006.LOS looks really bad at this stage. So I'm pretty much buggerd.(I'm not giving up though!)
It looks like omni is definitely out of the question, so I maybe I should look at dish antennas (24dbi)?
Any ideas?
"omni" is described as a swear word in the Wireless world.
if the LOS looks bad ur gonna have a hard time one option that could help is a 3m mast on each end
