Miles, is it possible to explain a bit more, like, what is the signal for, what do you want to accomplish. If for wifi in a house, start with a flat panel 8-12dbi from the client side to the router and visa versa.

miles try putting the access point in the roof, signal passes easier through ceiling than walls

thanks guys for all the help.the router is in my study which is about 12 m from my bedroom.the only problem is that there are about 4 walls between.there is a low signal in my bedroom which i can pick up with my laptop but not with my psp.ive tried two antennas - 9dbi and a big omnidirectional poynting antenna with little effect.im thinking about trying the netgear range extender which works with the electrical circuit.is this a good idea?

miles as Cyclone said, place the router in the roof.
I had the same issues and after i placed the router in the roof in a central placement to the bedroom and the other side trying to connect, it worked out nicely.

another consideration... If you can run cat5 to the router in the roof, why not just run it down at the other side too? I've found wifi in house to be troublesome, and have rather resorted to some longer cat5 cables and conduit. Works better, faster and way more stable.
