Hi all,

I'm new to these forums!
I'm in Gardens Cape Town, I'm a road down from the 3 Disa Towers.
I can also "SEE" Gardens Centre from my bedroom window but my flat itself is ideally situated.

I'd like to know more about joining CTWUG!

Can anyone who is near to me guide me, help me set it up etc...

I'd like to get the hardware and such, prices etc.

My ADSL router has wireless option btw...

Anyways, someone e-mail me on gdirsa@gmail.com if they can help me further because once on the network, I have so much to share with everyone.

Thanks!

Nick

Hi Nick

It's nice to see the wug is growing. I think your best option would be to come and join us on IRC and chat to the guys of the wug, especially Mufasa, Rellik, nOs. They should be able to help you decide what equipment etc. nOs will also be able to give you prices on hardware. There is a link to the IRC on www.wug.za.net, just join #CTWug

Hope it helps

Hi all,

I had someone offer his assistance, came over, but I live next to a power station and suffice to say, I could connect but there was lots of noise on the line, anyways, I asked my neighbours if I could maybe setup a antenna or what not on their balcony and they said yes, so long i share whatever I get on the WUG with them.

ANYWAYS!
The guy who was helping has since then stopped replying to my msgs so I'm guessing he has lost interest.
My situation will require effort and I just need someone who is interested enough to help me get on the WUG.

Hi Nick, can you see Signal Hill (just below noon gun?)

Not sure if CTWUG has a highsite there yet (there is a mast with loads of kit).

I have access to a mast a little below the noongun area.. which I could use to help extend CTWUG.

Mike.

I did some scans and I can see CTWUG Milnerton & CTWUG Ocean, now I just need to get a GRID antenna and test signal... can anyone help me with that please?

Johnny came over with his "wireless in a box" and yeah, just need to test the rest to know what stuff to buy.

Nick, chat to Johnny on IRC, I may have a plan for you to test with a Grid.

nOs, thanks, will do!
Just need to get final confirmation with neighbour and will purchase the equipment then you guys can come over with grid and then bam, we almost done and sorted.
The amount of help you guys have given me has been amazing!
I'm so proud to be apart of this community (or will be)
You guys rock!
I just hope all the stuff goes the way I need it to.

Hey Nick, sorry to hijack this thread.
I am also in Gardens, how easy was it for you to get sorted?

I don't really have the money to spend and then find out I cannot find any CT-WUG APs.

He disappeared off the radar, never connected

Thanks Johnny.

So how can I know if I can find any CT-WUG AP's in my area?

Hi, so having read through this, it seems there is a site on signal hill. This still the case?

Is this a 2,4 or 5,8ghz?

I am in Wembley Square (Gardens). I can see part of the Hill, but not sure if its the right side...

Anyone nearby have some tips on where/how to get started here?

Can someone give me aballpark figure on what I would be looking at spending to get myself hooked up to your network?

Yes, I'm a filthy pirate, and have lots of booty to share- by the sounds of things, so do you guys, so I'm sure I can justify a decent investment...

hehehe, welcome JAH.
We do not really have any good sites covering the city bowl area, but I know there is plans to do so.

Watch here for progress...

OK, pity. How much traffic do you guys usually see in a month? Through WUG are we talking 10's of GB each?

Welcome JAH,

I am just up the road from you. In Buitenkant.
Seems the closest AP is actually Walmar Estate (iirc).
You will probably have line of sight. Me not. Stupid berg.

Cool. Will try to sort myself out, will let you know if I can connect, then could maybe connect to you...

What's the story with smaller networks/connections? How would we connect?

What you mean? Like if you had to connect and then broadcast?

I'm on irc most of the time idling, but I did download a few debian dvd iso's from the FOSS server in the same day. And didn't worry about the data usage ;) But expect low speed downloads in gaming time: 20:00 to 01:00. Also depend on a few things like Line of Sight, CCQ (on the RouterBoard), the server you are downloading from etc etc. time of day, weather... etc.

More like 10GB+ per day

Just waiting for my neighbour (upstairs) to get back from where-ever-the-hell-she-is and I'm going to confirm with her if it's still okay to put up the goodies, then I'll have a signal test done and hopefully within a month or 2 (aiming for a month) I'll be connecting - obviously just need to redo that signal test and then get the decent kit - I want good connections ;)

Jis almal,

Gaan kyk op wind, ek het 'n pos high site. Dis nie ideaal nie, maar as almal mesh in gardens sal dit dalk werk.

Hy het ook possible LOS met Walmer Estate & Nico. Ek dink Jupiter sal werk. Kyk op die foto's en laat my weet. Mars dink ek gaan nie werk nie.

Hier is die link na WiND: http://wind.ctwug.za.net/wind/?page=nodes&node=597

hello. I just moved into a flat in greenpoint. Its quite high up and have a view that goes across to Table view and stuff. I really want to get connected. I once scanned and picked up a ssid Juipiter but it was very weak. I assume if I buy some equipment it should increase the signal strength, but will it be enough? I heard that there is a test kit, would I be able to use it? not quite sure how this all works but I REALLY REALLy want to connect!! so if anyone can help it would be great. thanks
