Hi Guys

I have read many of the posts on the different forums and seen how there are many people out there who are intrested in getting connected via wifi but due to limitations being hills, mountains, buildings ect. cannot. So we have decided to help the wireless community and let you guys all connect up to each other via our infrastructure. If you do a scan and pick up WINX thats us we cover about 80% of the Western Cape and have recently just upgraded most of our infrastructure. Obviously there are a few guidelines to follow but i am sure we can make something positive out of this. I am also willing to offer advice (on this forum) with any problem you might be having i have been in the industry for quite awhile and have staxs of experience with wireless hardware, software and techniques. If anyone is intrested PM me. !alien

please state what these guidelines would be. lets keep this out in the open, no PMing

No prob here we go:

Your signal strength on our highsites must be no more then -80dBm.
You guys will phone in and give us your MAC so that we can authenticate you on our sites.
You need to decide on a IP range that you will use so we can assign it.
And finally because we offering this as a free service you guys can use the line to how you see fit except if anyone starts selling bandwidth or sharing bandwidth ie: ADSL then we drop everyone. Unfortunately we are a WISP and that wouldd be like taking business away from us on our own infrastructure.

Thats it.

How about letting us set up own equipment using your sites?

wifiED

That is definately not an option. There is already too many guys around as your 2.4GHz scans tell you. More 2.4GHz on our sites would just cause more hassles for us.

TThx wifiED, this sounds like a great option. Having all the random people hooking up to an existing backbone will help things grow a lot (I hope).
I assume that If we can connect to the backbone then we could also make use of your wisp services if need be?

I think I picked up one of your WINX APs when I did a quick drive around the other day with laptop in car :)
Hopefully that means I should see you once I get my antenna up.

I have been to a few areas in Rosebank but have not picked up the WINX signal. Anyone else in Rosebank found it yet?

what bothers me, the users are going to use it to share files between each other, large files iso images. should we really give a wisp the power to contol the links? limit speeds via their networks. it is a nice idea, just seems they are want to control the links. care to reply wified?

it almost sound to good to be true but thanks alot wifiED

These are links we are providing free of charge for the benefit of all. There is no hidden agenda just purely something we are able to give back in our current position. If the links are inadequate then im sure there will come a time where you have other options. Till then its your choice. We stand to gain no revenue but purely an overhead on our backbones.

I think it is only fair that a WISP should be able to control his own links. wifiED has obviously invested a lot of money in his infrastructure and needs to give paying clients priority. I have no doubt I would react in the same way.

I know the guys from WINX really well and I don't think there is any hidden agenda here. They also support the idea of a network for all.

Just my 2 cents

one other thing, within the areas they are going to have smaller meshes running, with one link to winx. Is that not bandwidth sharing?

I think the point is if somebody tries to resell there bandwidth using the WINX network that would be unacceptable

Correct Dave any commercial offering using us as a method of delivery would compromise the offering and in my opinion what the WUG's stand for.

WINX has been our common SSID for a few years and is part of who we are. WIreless Network eXchange

On the other hand what if someone were to share their internet connection on a non-profit basis? What would be the implication there? They are not profiteering off the WINX backbone, but in a sense might be considered "stealing money" in that they are providing a service you offer - albeit for free. No doubt this is going to be happening across the WUG - so where is the line drawn?

Mantis

I think the reason wifiED would be allowing us to use their network is for basic browsing and takes it that we wouldn't take advantage of his generosity as we are all constantly bitching about Telkom (for good reason). It might also attract us to become (paying) clients of his. The point is, he expects that the members of this WUG would be responsible with their usage.

@ wifiED: could you perhap supply a link to your site

So u only going to let us connect the meshes not giving any bandwidth to www witch is olso fine. When I scan I have winx in my list ?Mufasa we can connect to the office if he will give us a backbone to work on?

WifiED or anyone from/knowning about WO, I was ging to sign up for your service a while back but got Iburst instead. If I remeber correctly you guys have a tower in Constantia, could I connect to that from bergvliet? Ay ideas for the bergvlit or thereabouts area getting connected to the CTWUG? Anyone around there interested in starting up either?

I have friends in the area wo would join us, so if we can just get connected it would be great.

Hi Guys
Just want to know if the deal is still on?I've been busy for a while with some upgrades and other crap, and jus want to do some cath up before I go wild and buy equipment.
I read through the forum , and this sounds like a really nice deal, question is, is it still on and will it last?(if somebody accidentially share ADSL internet, will he/she get a warning first, or will everybody be cut immediately...and other questions like this)

wifiED?

Tanks Guys and have a nice looong weekend.

What has happened about this WIN X offer They have a very good coverage area.. Any news or has this post been scraped... ?! ?!

AJ
19-07-2006, 07:56
Yeah .. I was also wishing for WinX to allow us to use their High-sites for access to ctwug ... Would of been good ... but looks like they chickened out .. haha ... kidding!!!
But I hear another WISP might be doing it soon .. (fingers crossed) ... Northern Suburbs mostly ... Hopefully the Southern Suburbs\ Cape Flats will also benefit soon ...

As far as I know there are no one on the wug that shares there internet on an non-profit basis.
Personally I think if you want to use the services of an WISP you should have separate equipment for the connection to the wisp and another set of equipment for the wug. This way there is now confusion about using the wug as a way of selling internet for profit. Except if the user deliberately routes his internet back to the wug.
