View Full Version : Sticky Threads for n00bs
Hi, new user here.
I see there're no sticky threads- How To's are there, but there are lots. The search function's not getting me what I need to know.
Are there many ways of getting connected, such that a single method isn't recommended over others?
I see in WIND I'll likely have decent 5.8GHz coverage (Cook Rd, Claremont). Will have to measure building height to confirm.
Where can I find a list of recommended equipment and suppliers? Similar to How To, is there not a common list of hardware required to get connected?
Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places- any help will be much appreciated.
Hi Jah
Best place to start looking is http://wiki.ctwug.za.net/Getting_started and once you have looked at all that, speak to one of the admins of that highSite or Access point to get more information.
For equipment have a look here http://wiki.ctwug.za.net/Kits
Kind regards

Ahh, great. Thanks. Not sure how I missed that :(

Hi Jah
One last info is you can also use the IRC to get more information http://wiki.ctwug.za.net/CTWUG_IRC, just make sure when you ask that you state straight away that you are a new user and that you would like to get more information.
Eg. Hi, new user wanting to join the CTWUG in Clarement area, and would like to find more information
Hopefully that admin in the area will be on to help you but any admin should be able to give you a good direction on where to go next.
Kind regards
Sneaki

As per the meeting we will be working on queries like this for Noobs like you :) jke
Basically a quick WHAT DO I NEED e.t.c this has been discussed and a person/s will be appointed to help out the guys.....
Hey Jah,
I'm in Queen Victoria Road, really close to you. There are many options for you to connect in the area. 2 WUG highsites with sectors covering you, Uranus and Ariel, both have capacity on their sectors (5.8GHz). Then Moleman has a 5.8GHz panel antenna pointing in your direction which is also available to connect to as far as I know. Check out their locations on WIND.
I have a 2.4GHz panel on my mast pointing in the exact opposite direction to you, but nobody's connected to it, so you could also connect to that. 5.8GHz connections are best though.

Thanks all. Gotta do some homework now :)
