View Full Version : Small Steps ... "The Road To CTWUG" ...
Hi guys
As a newbie I found it a bit "difficult" setting up to ctwug.
Although I'm not connected yet, I thought it might be a good idea to "log" my progress and list the steps I took.
Please feel free to add your comments\views for the better of the ctwug community. Also if there are simpler\better\faster\easier\cheaper ways of getting connected ... please do contribute ...
here we go ...
1) Register on ctwug
2) Install mirc (chat program www.mirc.com)
2a) irc.jawug.za.net #ctwug
3) speak to the ctwug guys on mirc and also on www.ctwug.za.net, they are extremely helpfull. Also take a look at www.jawug.za.net to get some more info ... and a basic understanding of prices etc ...
4) After chatting on mirc\ctwug and searching the internet for more info, You will basically have a better understanding of all the requirements needed i.e. hardware, software,Terminology...wds, LOS etc ...
4a) Also chat to the guys as to what area you are in, as this would be a good start to indicate whether there are "highsites" that allow connection to ctwug etc. and will also guide you in which direction to "scan" .. both visual and wireless.
5) Before buying any hardware, I would advise you to firstly do a "scan" at your house\place where you want Wireless connection to ctwug.
5a) A laptop with wireless lan capabilities will be good enough.
Use a Network Stumbler utility (Netstumbler) to scan the area. A laptop with Wireless USB Adapter would be better.
A PDA with Ministumbler\WiFiFoFum\PocketWinc installed will also help. Once you scanned the area, list the SSID's on ctwug and someone might recognise one or two ??? ...
5b) Since the best connection (only connection) is LOS (Line Of Sight), a good idea would be to stand on your roof and use a Binoculars\Telescope to scan the area for line of sight. but if you ate your pronutro that morning ... you wont need the binoculars !!! kidding !!! ...
6) If you are happy that you can maybe connect to ctwug, then the next step would be is to purchase a Linksys WRT54GL. The recommended AP\Router.
Shop around (or chat the guys for best prices).
Check the serial number on the WRT54GL to make sure it can be "flashed" with 3rd party firmware.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G
and other websites and chat to ctwug guys as well
ctwug guys use DD-WRT firmware latest "stable" version
go to
http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php
and download firmware
follow intructions CAREFULLY !!!! ask if you are not quite sure ...
and that's where I am at the moment ...
My Linksys WRT54GL has been flashed to dd-wrt v.23 sp1 (rc1) standard (using 1st mini then standard *.generic.bin files) .. but please chat to ctwug pro's for more info as well ...
Thanks for all the help so far guys .... Anyways .. hope to add a few more posts here soon ... on The Road to CTWUG ...
Please do add your own views ... and a big Thank You to all who helped me so far ....
Update !!!
Also ... Use Google Earth to "plot" your location.
also try Nodedb.com (bit slow) as well ...
Submit your Longitude and Latitude on ctwug.
Ask around ... someone might have a complete list of all ctwug locations in google earth format and they will mail and update it for you... ???
and Select a SSID (example- ctwug.za.net_Jughead)for your (future) Wireless Network.
Thus indicating to those who are able to "see" u to maybe join ctwug.za.net and try to get connected etc etc ...
Hi Guys ...
No progress yet with my setup .. It's still in the "lab Testing" phase" ...
But .. Just a thought .... Not sure if it was covered already ... but here goes ...
I know a lot of guys out there are a bit "scared" of giving info away .. cos of not being sure whether it's legal or not ?? ... So just a few ideas to maybe add some relief to new\existing members ???
So maybe to add some kind of "protection" to all users ...
1)
Maybe the WebMaster (Head Admin etc etc) should add a "disclaimer" before entering the ctwug.za.net website .. I aint no legal expert, but maybe a disclaimer stating that the info acquired from this website and ctwug users and the mirc channel users are for 'information purposes" and cannot be used against anyone ??? not sure if it can be done ... but I've seen it on a few other sites ????
2)
being a newbie ... You kinda don't know where to "point" the antenna .. do scans etc ... where the highsites are ... who you can connect to .. wds ... Who you can contact to make a connection ... etc .. So ...
I know there is a list containing more info with where the ctwug highsites are .. and some members as well ... on Google Earth File. Which is being maintained by someone, not gonna mention his name here ... but yeah ...
So ... Maybe to make it easier for everyone to obtain this Google Earth File with CTWUG info on it ... Users should maybe firstly submit THEIR OWN Google Earth Longitude\Latitude co-ordinates to the person maintaining this file ... secret handshakes and other agreements in place etc ... and then the Updated file will be emailed back to this person (or everyone) ... or even to a downloadable position on the net .. maybe with password protection\encryption etc ...
With that info .. you will have a better idea of how many ctwug users there are around your area .. What would be the best Highsight to connect to ... Who in your area you can contact etc ...
Anyways ... typed too much already .. just a thought ... to make this whole process a bit easier for all ... to increase the ctwug community ... ???
Comments .. New ideas ... are always appreciated ...
Personaly, I cant see why the nodes are being kept such a big secret. According to new law it is no longer illegal to have wireless spanning accross a public road (thats if you dont supply internet?).
Only possible reason I can think of is to not lure any malicious hackers to the ctwug sites.
FYI, cloning MAC addresses are very easy, so doing mac filtering is a bit useless against them. Plus I'm sure that no encryption is used on the ctwug network.
But still... keeping the nodes secret wont stop hackers.
BTW, Jughead. Nice list. When you complete the list it should be put sticky so that other newbies can see what to do.

Hi guys
Just for the record, I am the one who maintains the Google Earth file with everyones location. The issue is not one of legality but more of privacy. Most of the highsits are on peoples houses. Some of these people are not CTWUG members, but allow us to use their premises out of kindness, charity or any number of reasons. It would not be ethical for me to release these exact locations. I have no problem sending out a GE .jpg file which will give a reasonable idea of where everyone is, but I first need to hear from all that they are fine with me doing that. If not I'll mask them off on the map.
If you want the jpg send me a PM with your email address and I will send the file back to you.
As for hackers, you dont need anything to get onto the WUG except to furnish your MAC address, it is not to keep hackers out, but just so we know who you are and where you are connecting. We also obviously need to assign the correct address ranges so you dont break the network.
For anyone complaining about how long it might take to get your MAC added and join the WUG, remember we all do this voluntarily in our spare time, so give us a break and understand what it takes to run a network like this.
Hope this clears up any issues with above posts. Please feel free to add more comments so that we can help.
Cheers
SD
Hi savagedavid
Good idea about the GE .jpg file ... and a big thank you to you and all others for all the work put into maintaining the file. Privacy is very important.
Hope everyone understands that ctwug is run on a voluntary basis and that patience would be greatly appreciated ... I do ...
So a big Thank You to You and all the volunteers making ctwug possible ... both here and on the irc channel ....
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay .. my progress so far .. "The road to CTWUG" ...
Not to worry about the MAC add request yet .. Not sure I can see any ctwug highsites (yet) ... still in the "lab testing" phase.
Will borrow a 24dBi Grid and do some more scans soon ... and then I'll start complaining ...hahaha ... kidding !!!!
I'm learning as I go by ... small steps ... small steps ...
Just found out now that I can't really do what I initially wanted with the WRT54GL ... I wanted to setup a home network able to connect wired and wireless equipment and to ctwug. So I would need another AP for wireless connections.
Basically the WRT54GL can run in AP, Client,Client-Bridge and ad-hoc mode.
So in ...
AP mode you can connect both wired and wireless clients to each other, but the AP cannot connect to another AP... ???
Client-Bridge mode .. The WRT54GL is able to connect existing wired equipment and also connect as a client to another AP wirelessly (Hopefully ctwug). The bridge function is the in-between ... ???
Ad-hoc .. basically peer-to-peer networking ... mesh networks ... ????
So ... basically ...
Desktop\Laptop (or existing network) ---wired---> WRT54GL --- Client-bridge mode --- Antenna ---> --- (- -) --- AP (Access Point) Ctwug-Highsite hopefully.
Mmm ... I think ... Any better explanation will be appreciated ... and please correct me if I'm wrong ...
Anyways .... Please do add your own views ... and a big Thank You to all who helped me so far ....
The issue is not one of legality but more of privacy. Most of the highsits are on peoples houses. Some of these people are not CTWUG members, but allow us to use their premises out of kindness, charity or any number of reasons.
Ah ok, that is understandable...
Jughead, here's a scenario you can do:
* Put the WRT54GL in client mode to connect to ctwug (or wherever)
* Connect the WRT54GL via utp to a PC that has either a PCI or USB wifi adapter
* You can now route all traffic from your LAN and WLAN via your PC that connects to your AP.
I have a similar setup to that (an old P2). I would recommend you use Linux as your routing box (only becuz i dont know how to setup something like that in windoze :p )
DesktopLaptop (or existing network) ---wired---> WRT54GL --- Client-bridge mode --- Antenna ---> --- (- -) --- AP (Access Point) Ctwug-Highsite hopefully.
that could work, but I'm not sure how many IP addresses you will be allow to use (they will all be on the same range?)
Anyway, If you need help with the routing, just shout.

Guys, having been through the whole learning curve myself I can give you a few hints.
The WRT54GL is a great unit for the money you pay, but anyone who is seriously into wireless soon finds out it has a lot of limitations. The "bad boy" of choice is the Mikrotik Routerboard 112 http://www.routerboard.com
This costs a fair bit more, but if you can afford it it will lift you wireless networking to a new level. It has 2 mini-pci slots for 2 wireless cards, which can easily be setup in any config. So you can bridge into the CTWUG and still have an Access Point out without using WDS, or create a midway PTP bridge, or do any other configuration you can manage.
I know it costs a fair bit more, but I have seen so many people buy WRT's and after a few months sell them and upgrade to Routerboards, I figure if you can afford it go for it straight away.
Any questions please let me know.
Cheers

Heres my little contribution :) :
If you want to see weather a link is technically feasable you can use the following bit of wireless theory:
FSL (Free space loss) is basically how much the signal goes down by, by just travalling over free space (hence the name).
To calculate what your signal 'could' be you can do the following:
FSL = 20+40*log(m)
Where m is the distance in meters.
Then work out the signal for side 1 of the link:
Antenna Gain 1
+ Antenna Gain 2
+ Output power in db of radio 1
- Cable losses
- Free Space Loss
Side 2 is basically the same, but change the output power as appropriate.
Output power in db is basically calculated as follows:
17db is 50mw
20db is 100mw
23db is 200mw
Basically every +3db is a double in power, and every -3db is a half in power.
REMEMBER that power is only for ONE side of the link.
Your cable losses would normally be around 1-2db
So assuming we have a 5000km link, with a 100mw ap on side 1, a 50mw amp on side 2, a 24dbi grid on one side and a 14dbi panel on the other it would look like this:
24 (Antenna 1)
+ 14 (Antenna 2)
+ 20(Access point 1)
- 2 (Cable Losses)
- 114 (FSL)
--------------------------
= -58 for side 1
24 (Antenna 1)
+ 14 (Antenna 2)
+ 17(Access point 2)
- 2 (Cable Losses)
- 114 (FSL)
--------------------------
= -61 for side 2
REMEMBER that that is a negitave number, so a lower one is better.
Also this is not taking into account all the other factors, such as noise and scattering and other stuff like that. A good way to be sure, is to minus about 10 from the total, assuming you have LOS.
To see if the link is possible you need to know the receive sensitvity for your ap. It's normally in the manual, and for different speeds it varies.
The WRT54GL's sensitivity is -91 for 1mbps and around -70 for 54mbps.
So -61 > -70 therefore a 54mbps link is theoretically possible over that distance with those antennas.

Hi Guys .. Wow !! Is this site dieing a slow death or what ??? Eish !!! ...
Looks like the ctwug road I took turned out to be a cul-de-sac ... Shame !!! ...
I borrowed a 24 DBi Grid Antenna .. Did a sweep on the roof and found the usual AP's when I scanned without the antenna. But will try again sometime (weather permitting).
But it looks like I won't be able to "see" ctwug AP's.
But I'll continue ... Maybe do a local neighbour-to-neighbour WLAN setup ... and hopefully it'll grow and maybe connect to ctwug soon ...
For us routing-networking newbies .. here's a link of a basic setup that helped me alot to understand basic networking-routing etc ...

Hey - dont give up hope yet. We will hopefully have a mast up on Bot Hill in the next month or so (the sooner the better and finances permitting), as well as something in the upper Newlands area covering the Southern Suburbs (if certain members cough, cough, c**2, cough get back to me)
As for the site - it is only as interactive as you guys make it, all the live action happens on IRC though. So come and join us there.
Thats good news SavageDavid
Can't wait. Us Southern Suburbs aka Cape Flats guys need to breath in the fresh RF wireless air as well ... Mmm ... Bot Hill ???
Yeah ... irc is the way to go to get immediate response ...
Not to worry .. I'm too stubborn to give up ... haha!!!
Looking forward to get connected ...
Thanks
Hi Jughead
must say your road to ctwug does make it easier for us newby's !amazed Also thought that ctwug was a very confusing area of utter greyness when it came to knowing what my next step is
Mufasa and savagedavid has been helpfull in the chatroom !heart
To all the "smarter" guys out there, would it realy be that hard to setup a page for us dummy's to go one stop shopping for info..PLEASE :p !alien
Get some tips from Jughead.. :p
Thanks Moses ...
Still no progress from my side ... Weather and watching Rugby (WP and Bokke) keeping me a bit more occupied ...
as well as limited coverage my side of the world .. but hopefully soon I'll be connected ...
One thing I would like to know ... PM mail me if u don't want to answer it publicly ...
What exactly goes on .. on ctwug ....??? when successful ???
Gaming ?? Sharing Files ??? Video - Voice Chat ???? etc ...
I'm still learning as I go by ... but what can a person actually do via the ctwug WLAN ???
How many users are there connected ???
Are they connected 24-7 ??
or do they connect only a specific time etc ...
Just wanting to know ...
Thanks
Yeah Them are good qeustions. I would also like to know what then..??

First of all, Big Up for Jughead for your determination.
Secondly ... I run and open system in Bellville supplying 3 blocks of flats with WLAN.
I'm running low dbi antennas to cover all the units close to me
for greater radiation angles.
We run DC with 3TB of files we share 20+ users mostly after working hours and WLAN gaming.
I have done scans and saw about 15 - 20 other networks in my area and realised that everybody is doing their own thing and that is our downfall. A big company will come along and declare our base stations illegal and then we will have to pay R500/month instead of doing this stuff for free. So we will have to merge sooner or later.
Anyways, i will be glad to help if anyone wants it.
Thanks
133
Thanks 133
Wow ... 3 TB (TerraBytes) ... Gee wizz .. That's a lotta data ... relatively speaking that is ...
True about the big companies coming in ... us smaller guys better start a commitee\council to tackle future issues ...
Hi 133
Yes we definitely want to know more... Have you got an ssid that i can scan foror do we get together and sotr out all the finer points... You can e-mail me also.. mosescapetown@gmail.co.za Lets get the show on the road... 8)

24-07-2006, 11:39
Yeah,
I have two, but i doubt it if you can see it cause i aimed for strong signal for multiple users near me. I have two SSID's
angus and angus-8dbI. I have one huge problem for long distance cause the big Sanlam building in Bellville is some 200meters away from me.
Chaou
Gus
I will scan for you and take it from there.. thanx.. 8)
Hi all
Another question...
Are there any Wireless ISP's that are linked to ctwug?
Offering primarily internet Access and also allowing members to access the ctwug wlan for peer-to-peer ?
If so ... details please ... Like website, Contact numbers\names, Costs involved... etc
Thanks
No Jughead. CTWUG is community owned so it would be unfair for a WISP to use the network to make a profit.

133 can you see any ctwug-* ssid's if you do a scan..
13309544
26-07-2006, 06:35
I dont know in which directions to scan. I pick up lots of signals. 24-7 online, marconi, ecc, ecc2, jhmstk, uitsig a lot of no names, but i didn't look for ctwug in particular. I will run a scan soon.
I Think towards Tygerberg Hill will be a good start. I think ctwug-low is on the Hill. Or ask Mufasa or SavageDavid for a Google Earth .JPG file.
13309544
27-07-2006, 09:02
I did ask them, but no replies............
ctwug-low was taken down and the hardware used else where afaik. it was being wasted sitting with no one connected.
13309544
31-07-2006, 10:05
Now this is exactly what i was trying to say. Could anyone please send me the updated wifi mesh jpg or something like that to angus.mouton@eskom.co.za
Thanks

Hello Guys ... Moses ...Stolla ... How things going ... ???
Been a while now hey ...
Started a new job ... so a bit busy learning some new things ....
Agree 13309544 ... Knowing about the ctwug Highsites would be great ... maybe someone should upload a .jpg file to ctwug.za.net with a map to give some idea where to scan etc ... but as the previous post stated ... privacy should also be respected ...... I'll see if I have a google earth file of ctwug members\highsites... but it is a bit outdated ... will email it to you when I do find it ....

In JugHead's words: Let's get more guys to join CTWUG
I have a Senao Access Point at:
33°48'18.08"S
18°29'21.00"E
I can see 'west1' if I run a scan. I also have 2 other senao devices connected to me within 1km radius.
How can I be of assistance to / join the community?
Thanks Savage David for the .jpg image of Ctwug.
Really Appreciate it.
Hopefully more guys can now use the info to the benefit of the ctwug community.
Just a question to the CTWUG Guru's...
If I can't pick up a Ctwug Highsite from my house... is it also possible to maybe be added to the Highsite if I have a Wifi enabled Laptop... Then maybe I can drive up to the highsite and Access the Ctwug network .... Until the battery runs out that is !!! hahha .... Just to maybe see what's going on on ctwug etc etc ...
Just a thought ... No biggy if not possible ...
Also ... Savage David ... How's the Southern Suburbs Highsite coming along ??? ... No rush from my side hey ...
Will hopefully try and assist if you guys do need some help ... I'm an expert in passing on the odd tool ... haha ... Hopefully I can learn the odd thing or two as well about wifi ...
Thanks to all ... again for the valuable contributiion in making ctwug possible ...
chat again soon ...
also ...
Just thought I'd let everyone know ... .. you need to be logged in (to ctwug.za.net) to view the ctwug .jpg image that was uploaded by Savage David.

that should not be a problem but u'll need to tell me which high site though
Hi Eben
Thanks for the response ...
What High Site is close to Lansdowne ?? Southern Suburbs ??? I'm not sure of which high sites are still around ... Heard equipment ctwug-low was used elsewhere???
What info do you need from me to allow me to gain access to the High site ?? Mac Address ???
Hi Eben ...
I PM mailed you my MAC Address
Let me know what other settings I will need to change as well ... Hope it works ...
Thanks
AJ
hi Jughead,
which access point (ctwug-platt, ctwug-ocean, ect) would u like to connect to?
Hi Eben
Ctwug-platt will do ..
Are there any high-sites in Southern Suburbs yet ???
I heard of one high site in Rylands ??? Bs? Bn ? Bw ??? or B1 B2 B3 ???
Not sure hey ???
Basically ... I would have to drive up to the high site ... and connect to it ... So any high site (preferably close to Southern suburbs) will be better ...
You decide and let me know ... Maybe send me (via PM maybe) where the location of the high site is as well please..
Is there also maybe a list of all the highsites available around for ctwug ???
Thanks again Eben ...
okay i added ur mac to the plattekloof site, will mail u an ip u can use and some servers u can try out (let me know if u can pick up ctwug-tbk - Tamboerskloof)
hi Eben
Thanks for the settings.. I drove to Plattekloof.. parked off at the shopping centre ... and I connected to ctwug-platt ... about 2hrs ago ... works well ... 11Mbps connection... +/- 30 kbps download ... using ftp ...
so now I know a little bit more what ctwug is all about..... I cant wait for ctwug to spread it's wings to my side of the world ...
Thanks again for your help ...
@ All ... We gotta try and get more guys to join the ctwug ...
So spread the word... email your friends a link to the ctwug website ...
chat again ...
AJ
it's a pity that u choose a saterday, hectic traffic
PS that ftp server i gave u is in parklands and were having some interferance problem over there, but that link from plattekloof to westbeach (18kms) is good for 20mpbs
yeah .. Saturdays will always be busy ...
I think I'll borrow the Grid antenna again and do some more scans around the area ...
But will start small in the area ... friends .. neighbours .. family ... will be cool ...
Thanks again Eben ...
AJ
really no problem - keep me up to date in ur quess :-)

Hi DjStyles
I'm in Lansdowne DjStyles ... kinda in a bad spot ...
I haven't got an Antenna yet ... only got the WRT54GL so far ... Are you setup yet ??? If so ... What's ur SSID ???
If I do get the Antenna ... I'll do a scan again ...
Where about in Ottery are you situated ???...
PM mail me for privacy issues ...
Wil be cool to connect to other ctwuggers ... haha
Thanks DjStyles

Hi there
Brand new to all this stuff, very interesting!
Got myself a 18db grid antenna, connected it yesterday to my network card and picked up some ap's west1 and the ctwug-ocean. Now the questions I have if you dont mind.
The ap I'm using support the following modes including AP, PtP Bridgee, PtMP bridge, repeater and client. Can I use it to connect to the network or do I need one of those Linksys aps? Anybody got one forsale?
And last but not least, what settings do I need to get on some of these networks.
Thanx in advance.
Walti
Walti - jump onto IRC and ask Mufasa to sort you out...
no it will do just fine, u just have to send me ur mac address and i'll activate u and give u and ip range u can use and then switch to client mode and that's it
Excellent! Will send it to you later today when I get home.
Thanx 4 the help.
New site up in Newlands area
"www.ctwug.za.net-cb22"
for us Southern Suburbs guys
Thanks to SavageDavid and cb22
Distance between myself and cb22 is approx 6 km's. Will do a scan and try to connect soon...
AJ
just remember that it is NOT an offical ctwug site....
Hi
Now that I'm connected to the ctwug,( thanx for the help)
how can I see what is on the ctwug?
Thanx
Walti72
Hi guys ... been awhile ...
Hi Walti72
I think u will need a FTP client software... get the settings from eben.. ip addresses.. servers etc ...
AJ long time no see
My site is up, now just need to connect to the wug.. 8)
If you still looking for antenna, you know you are welcome to mine.. extra don't need them anymore..
looking foreward to new site on tygerberg hospital... can you see hospital? :D
We should grab some coffee soon... and maybe some chicken-mayo's!! :p
Hi Moses
Yeah...long time no see.. Hope you guys are doing okay.. new job keeping me bit too busy..
So you up and running ... congratulations ...

I heard about this incentive but I see it's not very active. I am happy to set up an AP where I am (de Waterkant) but need to know if there is still enthusiasm...
Carrently have uncapped 512 ADSL via Hellkom and need to give them the shaft..
What gives?
Hi mckinnonhouse
Yeah .. not a lot of action on the website .. but more active via the irc channel ...irc.jawug.za.net #ctwug
Chat to the guru's there ... they are more than willing to help ... I think there is a ctwug Highsite that part of the world ... search the ctwug pages for a google earth map (might be a bit out-dated though) ...
