View Full Version : Coverage in Stellenbosch
Hi
Every few months (+- 6 or so) I come back to this site in hope that Stellenbosch has joined the great community of CTWug, so far I have always been disappointed, I am hoping that this time will not be the case :-)
Can anyone lead me in the right direction as to whom I need to speak to about Stellenbosch and the WUG?
TA
I'm very keen on getting ctwug in Stellenbosch, but it appears that the only way to do it, is to do it yourself.
As I understand it, there is some life, but the connections are shaky, privately owned and is in any case not generally available.
I'm buying some extra equipment end of November, and will be trying to bring a link into Stellenbosch early December. There is no guarantee that it will work, but if I get stable ctwug into Stellenbosch I would be more than willing to put up links to anybody.
If the links I'm planning fails, I will have to either arrange for a 15 meter tower (which seems like a massive undertaking), or try to negotiate with a farmer for use of a pump house for relay.
For now, the best you can do is plot your coordinates on wind.
I am already on wIND, but not sure now what to do, there is someone called jaja, but I cannot msg him. According to wIND he has 2 clients and 1 link, not sure if I can get hold of him though or how as he does not accept msgs.
I am keen to hear more and perhaps I can contribute, however until I know if it will work, I have to hang in there.
Last time I checked Stellenbosch is linked to the wug. Have you checked Wind to see if you live close to a connected node?
It looks like it, but I dont know how to talk to jaja to see if the node is still LIVE? I also see a lot of red lines, but does that mean they are not connected ?? could someone tell me the best way to connect to a node? or if jaja is still a live node? My node id is 3013.
Thanks in advance
I cannot speak for the other red links, but the one that is between leda and calisto is definitely dead.
I will try to contact jaja tomorrow, he is very close to you.
Please understand that the demand for wug in stellenbosch far outweighs the current supply (if there even is wug in stellenbosch). We need good quality backbone links before anything can be done.
I've added inactive links to wind along the path I'll be attempting in December.
For those interested, look at nodes:
zefram-potential-kore2 (#2888)
zefram-potential-lovell (#2661)
zefram-krommerivier (#14)
If this relay is good quality, I will be willing to relay the wug further. Ideally if the nodes I link to can relay even further.

I'm interested in connecting to any of the sites in Stellenbosch. I have line of sight to about 5-6 AP's, but I can't get a hold of anyone.
Zefram, if you would be so kind as to meet me in IRC. Would like to find out what is possible in our little town.

Hi,
I work in Technopark, and I'm working on a link to TP from Somerset West, and from there to one of the University engineering buildings. After that it's up to those in the area to join!

So far I know the Stellenbosch city council have rolled out free Wi-Fi over the whole town.

Not sure how this will affect the furture of the WUG in Stellenbosh???
Interesting that in 2010 TheFox made this blog post .
http://www.ctwug.za.net/entry.php?6-Stellenbosch-is-here-!
So what happened after that ? . Clearly Elvinnow was connected.
Anyway, I am close to the Pick and Pay Stelmark centre ( Plotted on Wind )
I have trees around so my only clear LOS is to the Kayamandi Hill ( Zion and Legacy).
Let me know if I can help to spread the WUG signal in the STB Central Area.
Cheers,
Nico.

Since there is no Internet on the WUG , it should not affect it .
It also uses a 6db omni , 2.4 Ghz and is mounted on a street lamp pole.
So you have limited range and .... its capped. 500mb.
Dont see it having an effect at all .
But wait .... is there a WUG in STB ?
??
