My mother is constantly complaining about my pc being on all night and that it takes a lot of power.

How can you measure how much electricity your pc uses?

I have a normal Core2Duo system with 550W Gigabyte PSU and 4850 GPU.
I also have 3 hard drives.

Can anybody give some input regarding this topic?

Thanks

You probably using anything from 250W during idle to 450W when you playing games.
Say to your mom your burning 3 100W light bulbs :P

I dont think she will be to happy with that.
So I take it I'm using 250w per hour on idle(downloading) and 450w per hour while gaming?

so then it will be 1kW every 4 hours.
6kW's a day
186kW's per month.
Lets add an extra 100 just for because I do some gaming, but not much.

Now, who knows how much 1kW cost?
Otherwise I must go search for the Eskom bill.

1kWh costs R0.7737

So 286kWh pm will be costing you R221.28pm

My PC has 4 drives also on 24/7.

It has to be less than 286kWh, since my monthly electricity bill is around R250 - R280, including lights, geyser, stove, fridge, another computer, etc.

Our electricity bill comes to R1000.
And it's just me and my mother in the house. And my brother and his wife in the flat.
And we have a gas stove.

So something must be wrong.

Correct...an Ave PC uses about R200p/m on the new ESKOM rates. Thats not those with this fancy GFX cards that dimms the lights everytime you plant a BOMB in COD. Deal with it or get an ETRAY from scoop to do all your downloads 24/7 and switch your PC on only if you need it.

ask your brother to turn their electric heater or blanket off.

Hahaha.
We don't own any heaters.
And their electric blanket are those low power ones.
If my mother complains again, I will just give her R100 to keep her quiet.
