Hi ive tried to get information on how safe wireless transmissions are to people in the surrounding area. Neither Miro nor Scoop have any documention. Does anyone have any links etc to information on the safety aspects of 5ghz and 2.4 ghz tranmissions that is readable by joe average.

Just to put it in context the average wireless transmitter puts out around 100mW. Any clever wireless provider (i.e. non-idiots who dont use amplifiers) will use sector antenna's to try to focus the target area over the rooftops of houses to get the maximum coverage of the target area. So on the ground you might be getting say 20% of the radiated power, or around 20mW. This equates well with the average Linksys or other home AP which pushes out 20-30mW at factory default setting.

You can compare this to the average cellphone which puts out anywhere from 1500 - 5000 mW depending on the distance from the cell towers - and remember you stick this against your ear and it is omni-directional!

So in short, you get about 100 times the radiation of an average transmitter using your cellphone and probably about 50 times when your neighbour uses his cellphone.

So in short, I would not worry!

Having said that I have heard stories of guys getting headaches while testing out 1 watt amplifiers when working in close proximity for more than 1/2 hour or so...

Microwave ovens uses the same (2.4Ghz) frequency that most of the wifi equipment operates on. Now on average a microwave oven pushes 500watts and by the FCC standards are allowed a margin of 0.75% leakage which gives u a leakage of 3.75watts on average so chances of u getting fried by ur microwave oven is much more realistic

PS: to test it, put ur wifi enabled device next to ur microwave and watch the signal taking a huge plunge when u switch ur microwave on

i suppose it would then be bad to have your microwave at waist level like mine is?? :/
