Mufasa i see you are busy trying to create a mesh. Would be cool if the people on the other side of "Tygerberg Koppie" can connect to the people from Table View etc. Hows is coming along?

We can help with that if there is line of site.
Or if u will be able to see our high site from Tygerberg Koppie, I don?t think it will be a problem.

i am quite interested connecting to the mesh. i live in kirstenhof (from 1 November). if someone could help me get connected, i am willing to document the entire procedure with photos and the whole works.
a jawug-like kit would be great. i think more ppl will join the mesh if there is a ste-by-step guide.

andres101, i am busy working on a "Getting started" guide. I will post it here as soon as I have finished. We can get the JAWUG kit here but it will more expensive than the jhb jawug kit. but will keep you all up to date.

this site is shocking. there is NO info. one has to go to the jawug site for any info.
so now... is there actually something setup or is this just an idea for now. if there is i would love to get on it if available in my area. i can get all hardware @ cost price as i work for a computer company.
That's right LispWarez, don't assist, just criticise :)
The Yagi antennas seem quite cheap @ 12dbi for around R 300, perhaps that's a consideration for the kit.

aquarat, we should try to link up soon. I'm in Brackenfell, near Ranch Meat. I've got my AP, just have to decide on an antenna.
also .... make a list of items needed and where to get it. Currently the only hardware I know of is Senoa from miro

this is a start, we are trying to give the Cape Town people a site for them to have a central point to contact each other. If you have any info that you would like to add to the site, submit it and it will be posted.

mufasa, what antenna do you reckon i should get? I've got a bit to spend so I thought of getting a variable sector as it's quite versatile. Would you agree that horizontal polarization is the better option?

well, most of the antennae are very directional so I thought an antenna with a variable beamwidth might be a good start, seeing as I'm not connecting to any one specific node yet. However, if there will be access to a high site, then that changes the picture a bit. XCalibre, just down the road from Ranch (And that's Ranch, the meat place, not Cape Ranch(which is also a meat place but not that kind of meat, hehe)

mufasa ... general wireless hardware .... cheaper setup then what miro charges ....
How do you get clients to cost about R1000
(ap + antennae + box + poe)

I don't think you can get it that low.
Linksys AP: R750 +/-
12dbi Yagi: R300 +/-
Cable: R180 +/- (3m lmr195)
Box: Would be cheaper to buy from a hardware shop R?
POE: Build it your self R80 +/- (or if you have some of the hardware as scrap, Free)
so R1310 +/- (excluding box, pole and bracket)
The prices may be out a bit but it is a ball park figure.
