CAPE TOWN WIRELESS USER GROUP

Jupiter up and running

First of all, I would just like to thx everyone that were involved in this little marvel, either by planning, funding, helping, support. It was a mayor effort from all involved.

Thanks go out to Marius for allowing us the necessary space to mount our equipment on your tower.

This little spot on Tygerberg allowed CTWUG to have there own backbone between the Parow / Plattekloof and Brackenvell / Durbanville area. The day this site went up was like discovering a new world within wugging. Thx allot.

Let me explain more about this High Site:
It consist of 2 x 27dBi 5.8GHz grids pointing to Neptune [link] and to Saturn [link] as the backbone. One 17dBi 5.8GHz Sector covering Brackenfell and Durbanville and one 14dBi 2.4GHz Panel to Durbanville and surrounds.

The amount of ppl needed for this install were vast, we had 3 teams off ppl at various points, 1 @ Neptune (Routers), 1 @ Jupiter (Hard Working but Crap cold), 1 @ Saturn (Brave but Insane).

Brave and Insane: Scarfreewill, Cyclone, Blue-Sky, Skinner, TheFox, Gappie, Phoenix, Summoner - We must give this team credit, they are as insane as it gets, imagine a 8m rooftop with in 6m pole that sticks out more or less 4.5m. Know add a bunch of nutters, a 6m ladder to the top of the roof and the leader of the nutters to the top of the ladder aligning a backbone grid.

Hard Working but Crap cold: Marius, Oortjies, Stolla, nOs - To get on a 12.5m cherry picker the first time in your life with a pilot that have 0mins of experience and had a brief 5min tutorial. As we parked this daddy long leg under the 17m Mast, it started to hale followed by rain, we were not impressed. It was a battle to keep the coffee out of our minds and focus on gripping the equipment as our hands wanted to stay close from the cold. But it was worth it.

Routers: Rellik, Johnny - Well they had it easy, less than 3m from the ground aligning a grid, as soon as the grid were aligned they started with the routing. By the time everything were connected we had traffic flowing.

Thx everyone for taking the day of from work to make this happen.

I would just like to thx a few ppl that made this a reality:
Summoner, thx for allowing us the space to come and erect this seriously long pole on your roof. Dade, Blue-Sky, Cyclone, Stolla, TheFox for your willingness, braveness and last but not least, stupidity. It is nice to see that we have a bunch of willing ppl that will help grow the wug even if it will cost them an arm or a leg or two if they fell from that height.
You guys have done some stupid things, it was high and dangerous, but all pulled thru to make this site a possibility.

Let me give you guys an idea what this install was about: The building that the pole were fastened to is roughly about 8-9m high. We installed 2 brackets against the wall, the pole are sticking more or less about 4.5m high out above the roof. the guys pulled of the incredible, the grids were aligned before the pole were lifted into place. The big grid gets good signal to tower were we are going to install Jupiter on, the other grids runs to Bot, then there are 2 120degree sectors covering Kuilsriver and parts of Brackenfell.

Thx again for all that made this possible.

Pluto aka Plattekloof High Site up and running
nOs on Wednesday 07 November 2007 - 11:30:13 | Read/Post Comment: 1
Were do I start.
Pluto links from Mars with a 24 dDi 5.8 grid on each side, this is the most amazing link so far that i have seen. We were 2 teams of 3 people on each side. The boys team @ Mars and the oupas @ Pluto. I still don't now why I had to be an oupa, but let us leave it at that. When the oupas got on to the roof of the house our hopes dropped of ever getting Pluto and Mars connected as we had a hill and allot of houses in our way, but never tell a wugger it can't be done. It is just something they don't understand, either out of the spirit of making some insane stuff work or just plane stupidity.

We started of with installing the RB333 and the grid to scan for Mars, after some pole bending and swear words we got an excellent signal and a great throughput.

WE HAD AN LINK!!!!!

rellik and eben (the real oupas) started to install the 120 deg 5.8 sector and fastened all the components, while I was in control of the best pair of 2 way radios I ever used to get the best signal on the backbone link. Thx Oortjies

We were in constant communication with the boys down at Mars to get the grids aligned as best we could.

I would just like to thank all that were involved in the planning, organizing the site (Eben) and all the hard work involved.
And finally for Scoop Distribution, this is an big one, we were able to source all the equipment for Pluto out of our agreement with Scoop free of charge. This rebate deal rocks.

THX to all CTwuggers that have helped build and grow CTWUG to what we are today, keep up the good work.
